Look Up....Way Up

Inside the glass pyramid, at the Louvre.

Ceilings

I recently took a  trip to France and I was getting a sore neck from looking up at all of the stunning embellishments to the ceilings, in so many of the old buildings. It really made me think of how here, in the North Americas, we have a tendency to forget how the ceiling can be a decorative feature. From painting it a different colour, to wallpapering it, we can create visual interest on that surface, just like you would on a wall. This is a great option, however knowing how you use the space, and what feel that you want for the room to have are both key elements to consider.

Take a walk through some incredible ceilings, from my trip to France.

Inside the Palais des Papes (The Popes’ Palace) in Avignon.

This was one of my favourites. I am standing inside a fireplace, the size of a small bedroom, and this is the chimney that goes up three stories.

In the main dining hall, at the Palais.

All of the grandeur of these ceilings made me so happy and in awe.

This is actually outside, underneath an arch, that is in the main courtyard, facing the Louvre.

The ceilings in the Louvre.

The arches, in stone, are amazing.

In some of the spaces, there are amazing amounts of gold gilding.

Art and gold…so shiny.

Skylights that brought in daylight, as candles were expensive.

This isn’t a ceiling, but I just had to get this shot from under the Eiffel Tower. It was so cool to experience.
