Travel the World...or just look like you did...

Recently our family went to Mexico…all 18 of us. It was a great trip, and reminded me of varying décor styles from different places.

Over the past 15-20 years, as our world has become smaller through the ease of sharing information, there has been a trend in fashion and home décor that has incorporated exotic accents or accessories from around the globe. These accents range from tribal patterns on pottery to rich silks in our fabrics. By incorporating “worldly” accents in our home, we can get the feel of outreaching experiences, whether we have been to places afar, or not.

Accents in our home that can stimulate our senses are often fabulous topics of conversation. From the sounds of a fountain, that brings to mind tropical waters, to the smell of the rainforest. This often incites interaction between our home décor and the people that live in, or we invite into our space.

If worldly travels aren’t in the budget, often times we can travel closer to home. From the earthy, artistic feel of the west coast to the old-world charm of the east coast, Canadian art and accessories offer up a diverse touch of our own culture.

Many Canadians holiday in Mexico and places down south, why not keep touches of those cultures in our home décor, whether it be a framed photo of a particular sight-seeing tour, or a piece that just instills the feel of that rich culture.

A familiar icon that we see abundant in home décor is Buddha. It is a far stretching icon that represents a people, and culture far reaching around the globe. This touch of the exotic adds interest to any home décor style.

Remember to keep exotic touches to accents in your space. This is the key, so that you always embrace your own sense of style, and that the exotic look doesn’t overpower your decor. It’s easy, and doesn’t have to cost a lot, to have a world traveled look.
